Across the Cook Strait to Picton
I arrived on the South Island by travelling across the Cook Strait on the Arahura, the oldest of the Interislander ferries. Arahura means “pathway to dawn”, and the ferries carry about 1 million passengers from Wellington to Picton and back every year.
It’s a three-hour trip across the Strait, but there’s so much to do on the Arahura, and I had so mooch fun. I even checked out their moovie theatre. I saw some great scenery, watched the gannets diving for fish, and I even saw dolphins playing in the wake behind the boat.
So here I am - in Picton to be exact. Picton is a little port town right at the head of the Queen Charlotte Sounds. There’s so much to do in this area, I wish I had more time here.
The Sounds are some of the most naturally picturesque places in New Zealand, no wonder this is such a popular place for tourists!
There’s heaps of awesome outdoor activities to do, like walking the Queen Charlotte Track or kayaking through the Sounds. The Sounds are also full of protected fish reserves and sunken wrecks, which make it a farmtastic area for diving.
